When planning a home theater system the position of your speakers can make a big difference in your listening experience
The center channel plays a very important role in your surround sound system. The center channel provides the dialogue so placement should be above or below the center of your television. The ideal height of the center channel speaker would be the same height as your front speakers' tweeters or as close as possible. Also your center channel speaker should be the same distance as your front left and right speakers are when seated.
Speakers need to work together to create the surround sound experience of a home theater experience. Make sure your speakers are matched. This will give you the best sound. Voice matching is key to an effective home theater experience. Choosing speakers from the same series of speakers generally provides the best sound experience. The following speakers provide the best home theater experience.
Front left and right speakers
Center channel speaker
Surround speakers
Subwoofer
Front speakers not only serve to handle the movie's soundtrack they also provide the sound for stereo music. This makes their position an important factor when placing them in your room. The front left and right speakers should be placed so the tweeters are aimed at your ear level when seated.
Surround sound speaker placement should be placed to the left and right of your seated position if possible. Since every room is different you will need to experiment with placement of the speakers to determine what works best for your situation. Ideally they should be placed above ear level, a good rule is to place them at ear level when standing.
A subwoofer provides the lows needed to truly experience home theater. Plan on including a powered subwoofer. Most soundtracks provide a dedicated channel for deep bass. This is what makes the soundtrack sound more lifelike. Special effects like explosions give you the feeling of actually being there. A subwoofer also adds to the music experience since most speakers don't provide that level of bass that a subwoofer can.
